I comuni in Italia sono circa 7904, concentrati maggiormente nel Nord del Paese, basti pensare che il 19% di loro si trova in Lombardia ed il 15% in Piemonte.
A livello territoriale, la Lombardia è l’area con i Comuni meno estesi (meno di 16 Kmq), a fronte di una media italiana di 38 Kmq per Municipio. I Comuni meno popolati si trovano in Valle D’Aosta (circa 1.700 abitanti in media), Molise (2.200), Piemonte (3.700) e Trentino Alto Adige (3.800).
Le aree del Paese con i Comuni più estesi sono Umbria (in media 92 kmq) e Toscana (84 kmq). Nel Meridione si registra la dimensione media per Comune più elevata in termini di popolazione: in particolare Puglia e Lazio superano i 15.500 abitanti, a fronte di una media italiana di circa 7.600 abitanti.
